Why do you get break outs after applying a moisturizer?
Why do fine lines keep appearing and becoming more visible even though you are in your mid-twenties and religiously using a moisturizer with SPF protection?
Why does your skin start flaking in winter?
The answer is - you must be using the wrong skin-care products for your skin type.
Identify your skin type and adjust your skin care accordingly.
This will be the first thing a beauty specialist will do when you come to a salon for a treatment: identify the type of skin you have and the skin condition.
The skin care products and treatments you will need will depend on your skin type, skin condition and age.
1. Normal skin – balanced skin not too oily and not too dry. Is usually smooth and naturally well moisturized. The pores are fine and not very visible.
2. Dry - skin is the result of low activity of skin oil glands, it is prone to flaking and fine lines, looks dull, and is sensitive.
3. Oily skin– the skin surface is oily/shiny due to high secretion of sebum, has large clogged pores. Prone to spots, pimples, black heads etc. However oily skin remains younger looking for longer time as compared to all the other skin types.
4. Combination skin – mostly it is combination of oily skin in T-zone area (forehead, nose and chin) and normal or dry around the cheeks, eyes, mouth
Some cosmetologists single out “Sensitive skin” as the 5th skin type. However it is more of a skin condition than skin type. All the types of skin can become sensitive and characterized by delicacy and sensitivity (hyper-reaction such as breakouts, redness, itchiness, flaking) to the changes in environment, cosmetics containing intensive ingredients or alcohol, synthetics etc.
In addition to these skin types, there are many in-between/transitional skin types. For example dry to normal, normal to oily etc. Your skin type can sometimes change from season to season. For example if you have a normal type of the skin in winter you may experience some flaking as your skin gets dryer and in the hot summer weather you may notice some shininess and more frequent break-outs. Also depending on your age and state of health your skin type might undergo some changes that will require changes in your skin care routine and products.
Note that your body skin type can be different from your facial skin.
